It belongs to the mesocarp Greek table olive varieties and is cultivated to a large extent around the city of Kalamata (from which is was named) and to a smaller extent in the other areas of Greece. It is an excellent variety of edible olives of origin, which has also the highest percentage of traffic at home and abroad. It is cultivated in both the plain and the semi – mountainous areas. The fruit is harvested mature from November until Christmas.
